shock flyer, lipo battery size

Im gettign a shock flyer and want to know if i can use a kokam 700 mah battery instead of a 340 for longer flying time. The only difference is .33 oz of weight, i know i should keep it light but is .33 oz really gonna matter?

I have:
Hs-55 servos
Electron 6 receiver
Phoenix 8 amp ESC
Api brushless motor( Cant remember the model)

Anyone know where you can buy a fireproof box for charging lipos?

Anyone have a hobbibo accu-cycle elite? Comments!!! Or does anone have a different charger that they like. Price is not a problem

I would stay away from the Kokam's altogether, 340 or 700 IMHO. A lot of the other LiPoly's are better in my experience. You get those massive discharge rates at a price....the voltage drop is terrible. I have a Kokam 340 2 cell that I will sell to you for $15...only used 3 times.

I would get the 3 cell 700'ish TP's...or some other manufacturer. Someone will come along and suggest another besides TP I'm sure.

Best idea I've heard as an alternative for a fireproof box is to get two gallon size ziplock bags and fill them with sand. Then sandwich your pack between them when you charge. If the pack happens to blow or catch fire, it melts the plastic and the sand smothers the sucker.

Who makes tp?

Thunder Power make Thunder Power.

Hobby-Lobby stocks them, but there are other places who carry them.

That is a great idea!
Nothing wrong with kokam 2 700 i use them in my shocky an they are great i also have a TP 1320 2 cell and its great !!! If i were you i would go with TP 2 cell 1320 i like it better.

Is that ESC a 3-Phase brushless controller? Never heard of that.

Get the Kokam SHD 340's. Less flight time but more power and better flight characteristics.
lol.. :)
Everyones got an opinion.

Are you flying indoors or outdoors...?
I get about 3-4 minutes of 3d flying on my Kokam 340 outdoors fighting the wind. And then an hour to charge.

I would agree the plane hovers easier during that very short time.
I use 2s Apogee 830's and 2s TP 860's. About 14 minutes with those. The 3 cell 700's give wicked power...but I don't like the weight.
I'm gonna reply even though I don't have my Extrema yet - it's on order.

I have however spent the last several weeks reading through literally thousands of threads on this plane in various groups and have talked through email to some of the guys who really had a lot of experience with the plane.

The main concern with this plane is weight. I've settled on the same batteries as cropdusterdave in the last post. This seems to give the best balance between long flight times and light weight. Most people have said the same thing about 3 cell as well. The power with the 3 cell is insane with an AXI motor.

If money is no object, in most posts I saw, people LOVE the Astro 109 charger. Everyone likes the triton as well. The Triton can do glow stuff too if you need that capability. For cost reasons I am probably going to go with the Apache 2500. It has a good reputation and is only 49.95.

i love my 2500 charger,
i got throw Tanicpacks.com in there they have great little tanic taps that let you watch cell voltage and have 12c discharge capacity
and PaulSwany is a distributor support a bro :D
I would consider these additional things.

1. Not all lipoly are created equal unlike most NiCads which are pretty much equal. Take a look at the TanicPacks.. They may cost more...but the cost of the LiPolys seem to be diectly proportional to how good they are.

2. With 3 cell LiPolys...you will be more easily able to move up a bit on your gear from the Shocky to a few other types of foamy planes when you get sick of the shocky. You can only crash a certain kind of plane a certain number of times.

Well sure...but if you get much bigger....you may as well get a 3 cell 1200 mah pack or something of that nature. I flew a 12 oz foamie with the 2208/34 and 3s 1200 lipos with real good power. For the sub 8 oz foamies....2 cells works good and saves weight. If you really want it to perform...put a CD Rom motor on it. Get er down to 6 oz. THEN it gets FUN! The little axi is actually plenty heavy for a shock flyer.
My Shocky is almost built, and now I'm gonna shoot the questions...

First, my set up is: Axi 2208/34, Hitec Feather (to be upgraded at first affordable moment to Berg 5), HS-55s, and a CC P-10.

For a battery, I was gonna shoot for the Tanic 3S 830. I have it, and would like to try it, but maybe a 2S would be better all the way around?

Chargers... I have been using a Hobbico Field Charger II for this. I have been told that they will not 100% charge a LiPo, and I should change to something else. I have a few other Nicad and NiMh chargers. Will the Triton really 100% charge a LiPo (3S and 2S), or should I go for the Astro Flight? It would be nice to carry only one charger to the field, but will the Triton do the job right? Does the Astro FLight run on 12V, or 120V?
The Astro 109 will 100% charge lipos, but only runs off 12VDC. I have a regulated power supply for home and a deep cycle marine trolling motor battery for the field (but can also run it off a cigarette lighter plug in the topper if need be).
Chuck, your preference is Astro over Triton then?
I've never used a Triton.. I had all kinds of NiMh/NiCd chargers so I got the Astro. I also have an Apache 1500 and 2500, they work fine (the 2500 only works off of a battery for some reason so it's field only), but they aren't as flexible (or expensive!) as the Astro.
The 3s will work just fine if that's what you have. I have a 3s 700 pack that will flutter the ailerons in vertical punchouts. I find the power to be more manageable on 2s myself. Either way....
I have a Triton that I use for all my stuff. It charges my lipos 100% just fine. The Astro 109 is a dedicated lipo charger...so if you already have a charger for all your other stuff....that one may work alittle better? I dunno. I like the Triton alot....jack of all trades.
