Saito 72 info

I have two Saito 72's, one newer (Series K) and one a little older (Series G). the older G series has never run as goos as the K one. It's never deasticked or lacked for power, just never transtioned as clean or idled as smooth.

Well, I saw something yesterday while flying that explained it. Reference the picture below. The intake manifold tube (C) was vibrating nearly 1/4 inch in and out of the head at certain throttle settings as I was running the engine up. Wearing the crap out of the o-ring and leaking air, no good. My newer one doesn't do this. It seems the carb is vibrating badly on the plastic backplate mount. The whole mounting tab moving around.

After doing a lot of searching on the net, I discovered that this is a design fault in the earlier models using the plastic backplate. I was corrected somewhere between the G and K runs. Note the extra support in the K backplate (A) vs the G backplate (B). I called Horizon and sure enough, there is an 'improved' backplate availible for the Saito 72 series.

Why these companies won't just come out and issue an alert when they screw up is beyond me. They will confess when cornered but elsewise they try to cover this crap up.

I love my Saito's and I've got the new backplate coming. Just thought this might help out a few Bro's.

Did they hit you up to replace it? Or did they replace it for free? I just checked mine out and it was the same as you g series. I've noticed before that the intake tube never sat quite right, but I've never had a problem with the motor so I didn't touch it. I'll have to look into that. Thanks!

Well, since product support is not availible on weekends from Horizon (bogus) only their order people on Saturday from 10-2. So I just ordered the new one ($8). I will need the engine right by the end of the week, too impatient to wait for product support to answer on tuesday.

And this engine has never deadsticked and has always made good power. It just never really purred like my newer one. Would never idle as smooth or low and was rougher on transition. I'm curious how mmuch improved it might be now.
