Muffler Question....

1456 Views 13 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  RayJ
Maybe there is a thread out there that answers the question I am going to ask, but which pipe is best.....the tower muffler or a mousse can pipe? I am looking to put one or the other on an o.s. .46 fx. Just wondering if anyone has an opinion.

I've used both, and I believe the MCP has an edge over the Tower. With a MCP the throttle is very smooth and top RPM is higher. The Tower wins in the price department if you can factor out shipping.

Well I can pick up a MCP for $20....

Is that a good price?
I've got the Macs one piece black muffler, the Tower muffler, and the MCP. I'd rate them from fair to best in that order. The MCP really makes the .46 engines rev quick and high.

Great price considering I've never seen the header for less than $22. Care to share your source?

Tower mufflers have been as low as $13 on sale.
actually the great price comes from a fellow that i fly with....he is known here as staggerbee (or NUGGET)
For a direct comparison of the Tower muffler to a MCP, go here:

Note that with an oversized mousse can, the Tower muffler and the MCP performed exactly the same. But once the proper size can was installed on the MCP, there's really no comparison between a Tower muffler and a MCP. :D
Listen to Dave...he knows what he's talking about. I will NEVER fly a Tower muffler again. A round of MCP's for everybody!!!

Nugget????

The price just went up to $25.00!!!!!!

***!!!!!! :cash:
The tower muffler tends to come apart and is leaky as well.
OK.....

Put the MCP on the O.S. .46 and tried to fly it today.....
It would not turn more than 10k rpms. In order for it to run I had to lean it out until it was 1 turn out...ran like shit!

Took the mcp off and put on a macs pipe and holy shit!!!! I had to richen back up the 1 turn and the damn thing ROCKED!!! It turned 14.2k and no problems....

I was told the mcp can was too big, that it needed to be smaller than the 2" can that was on it....

What prop are you using? A 46 size engine with a MCP runs best with an 11x4, 11.5x4, or a 12x4. The 12.25x3.75 runs OK, but has a pretty slow spool up time.

This sounds like you have a severe restriction in the exhaust outlet.

This pretty well confirms your MCP has a severe exhaust restriction.

Bingo! A 2" can on a 46 size engine won't provide any power boost. You need a 1.75" diameter can, about 6.5" to 8.5" long. Exhaust outlet should be around 1/4" to 5/16" diameter. A 46 with a MCP should spin an APC 11.5x4 up around 14,000 or higher.

You can save yourself a lot of time and frustration if you'll just take a few minutes to go back and read Quicker's Mousse Can Pipe thead.
I switched all 3 of my m.c. exhaust sizes from 1/4 to 5/16. The .46's seem happier and seem to transition quicker and easier.

Alright, I am a hard headed person and have to learn things the hard way by trial and error and not listen to advice that other people give me I guess. After reading your quote I went out to the garage and grabbed the mcp. When I picked it up the exhaust outlet was loose, and i gave it a tug. When it came out there was a glob of silicone that came out with it, which means McDDD is one smart damn cookie. So now I am going to try the MCP again, with a smaller can!!! Also, I am going to try and not be so hard headed and READ before I go out and try something so that I do not waste time....

Thanks!!!
