monokoting a Tribute or Ultimate?

Has anyone tried to use monokote on one of these for their graphix?
If so what temp did you use?
I tried last night on the bottom of the stab but the heat took the gloss off the coating on the foam. Before I start screwing around with doing more I thought I'd post and see if anyone has any hints or tips...

I've used colored packing tape to do graphics on foam... Just stick the tape to some wax paper and cut out what you want... Then peel back the wax paper a little at a time as you apply the tape to the model.

You can also use sharpies.
Hey Swany,
I though about doing that but I found out how to do a cool 3d flag, (thanks Gator), and was hoping to be able to pull one off on this one.
Would sure look better than the stupid stickers that everyone else is going to have on theirs..
What can I say, give me a little knowledge and I'm just more dangerous!
If I were going to use covering I think Id try something like Econocote which shrinks at a lower temp as well as being lighter.
I've been puting ultra-cote trim on blue core and depron with great success. Use a scrap, start with a very cool iron, slowly up the heat 'til the ultra sticks (It sticks at a much lower temp than mono). So far I haven't hurt the foam at all.
I prefer Sharpie-cote. I also didn't want the Copy-Cat-Cote stickers that came with it. Mine resembles the H9 Extra 330 on the wing and horizontal stab, with a few stripes on the fuselage. Sharpie-cote don't weigh much.

I'd also want to use the lighter materials. Monokote and Ultracote can be beat, on weight, by a few covering materials now.

You could always do the Windex thing with Monokote too, no heat required.
If you want to use monocote, cut out your pattern and spray the back with 3M 77 spray glue and mask off the fuse and do the same (very lite caots). Wait about 10 min or until it is just hazy, make sure you have it where you want it, once it touches the surface it is done!!!! No heat required, good luck :rockoncool:
The first ingredient in 3M 77 is ACETONE!! Look out with that on foam, there are some that are foam safe. I guess that may be why you said "light" coats, but it's still there.

I wonder if windex works on foam, it's not as "smooth" as putting it over monocote. I'll try it.....
I've used 3M 77 on white foam and on Depron, but caution sure sounds in order. A mist is all that is needed, and if it is sprayed on the Monokote and not directly on the foam, that's your best shot.

With Windex, there might be some loss of effectiveness due to the porus nature of the foam surface, but it's also going to encounter much less pressure, and no fuel.

I'm curious how this turns out, post some pice when done, please.
FWIW, Solite can be ironed onto Depron without melting the foam, but it is so thin it shows the texture of the Depron and looks like crap IMHO.
I tried to do the Windex thing but didn't get any adhesion...
Must be something in the film that's on the foam that won't let the windex do it's thing.
I'm going to try with the iron down about 150 or 175 and see what happens. If it starts to cause problems I'll just use Pactra paint and airbrush it. I've never had a problem yet with airbrushing but was hoping to try something different.

Thanks

Hey, now thats a good idea. I know for a fact that it works on EPP foam ie. TufFlight 4D.
I used 3M 77 on my Zagi, which is 1 pound white foam and EPP. I alsu played with it as an experiment, bonding two lawers of 3mm Depron. It did fine.

Use as little as possible. It clumps if you let it.
I painted mine with the stuff you do model cars with (testors?) Turned out nice but it doesn't have the gloss when it dries. One things for sure, it isn't going to have the ugly hanger 9 yellow on it!
