IS THIS A CULT?

12493 Views 72 Replies 42 Participants Last post by  Straightup
Hello, I'm Billy Hell.
Some have said the Pro Bros are cult and I am the Jim Jones of the group. I have read where people have likened us to the Hells Angels of RC. I have also read that we are trouble makers and Dave Brown has called us the 1%ers of RC.
I find it interesting that people have looked for reasons not to like us from the start. My theory is that we, like 3D, are not trusted in general. Have you been to your field and had members talk behind your back because you were "one of those" kind of pilots? Have you heard the "if you want hover get a helicopter" line over 100 times? Well I think the feelings towards 3D are the same feelings directed at the Pro Bros. Lucky for us we don't care. We are a young group but we are over 5,000 strong. We have each others backs at all times. Most importantly we understand why we are all here. We all fly 3D and are seeking out like minded people to talk to and if we are lucky enough, to fly with.
So I won't be passing out cool aid but after a full day of flying I might offer you a beer. Welcome to the Pro Bros.
Billy Hell

Let see are we a cult?
Cult =
A. "A religion or religious sect generally considered to be extremist or false, with its followers often living in an unconventional manner under the guidance of an authoritarian, charismatic leader"
Or =
B. "An exclusive group of persons sharing an esoteric, usually artistic or intellectual interest. "
Or =
C. "Obsessive, especially faddish, devotion to or veneration for a person, principle, or thing."

NO But;

We are "generally considered to be extremist" to the circle jerks

We are "often living in an unconventional manner" it is not many that have a 3D life style (balsa dust in the nose, CA on the fingers and holding X-Acto blade cuts closed and dreaming of the next pilgrimage to next 3D revival), and our planes don't die from old age

But we do have a "charismatic leader"
3 Cheers for Billy Hell :drink:

We are "exclusive" if you don't like us or our freedom of flight, you not a Bro

We are "group of persons sharing" inclusive if you like us and what we do and sharing what we know and helping even non Bro's

We are "Obsessive, -----, devotion to ----, principle, ---." We like to fly and push ourselves past what we know and can do now.

Have fun and 3D your nutsack off,

We are The Profile Brotherhood.

OK, I'm still confused, are we a cult or not? I don't care, I just have to answer that "Religion?" question now and then and want to know if I need to change my answer?

Oh, if Billy is the "Jim Jones" of the cult, I'd like to be the "second in command" and share the girls.......OH, did I say that?
Look at it this way....we have fun, fun, and more fun...we're a group that more likely to CUT UP than cut up circle jerks (OOPS that's a cut down) Frig 'm ALL I say! If they don't like it who cares! I say they're just jealous of our camaraderie!

I mean how many guys can do this....inverted hover! and Laugh your ass off after it's done!

Now I understand all the talk about nutsacks hanging low (keep the scissors out of billy's hands) and dont drink any kool aid offered up at a pro bro :D

You young pup's may not get this :?
I grew up as a child of the eighties. I grew up in a town that loved football, basketball and baseball..... And I played those sports, but they did not get my juices going.... I did however do well on a BMX bike, and later on a Mountain bike and pretty much any other of the Extreme sports. In a way I think my friends and I (and the whole rest of the world) took to the so-called Extreme sports because we were just plain bored with the standard 'ball' games. Along with the extreme sports came the lifestyle. Most of the Extreme sports freaks were/are not afraid to express their creativity or their opinions through their skill, style and voice.

Its the same with 3Dflying --- RC flyers were bored with flying in circles and decided it was time to push the limits to the next level. 3D is the "Extreme sport" of Model Airplanes, and the Brotherhood is the group that embodies the sport and the lifestyle to the fullest. The Bros are not afraid to express themselves with their skill, style and voice. We are also one of the most supportive groups around- not just to other brothers, but to anyone. Brother Gator is a member of my club and has trained probably more than half the pilots in our large club, and he is but one example. Brothers will welcome you into their pit area, workshop or even their cooler when its hot outside.

20 years ago, traditional road cyclists stated that Mountain bikes were a fad, Mountain bikers were cultists and the whole thing would not last. Flash forward 20yrs to today, go to a normal bike shop and count the ratio of traditional road bikes versus Mountain bikes-- Thats one heckuva 20yr fad. 3D flying and the Brotherhood will go on because they are the future of the sport- the next evolution, the next expression of the sport!

not to piss anynbody off, but even though the Pro Bro's fly 3D, there is still a difference between the so called 3D fliers and the Pro Bro's.

LONG LIVE THE BRO'S and BEER
What are saying we (Pro Bro's) can't be EGO manics with our little profiles  ? :p
Pro·file
NOUN:

A representation of an object or structure seen from the side.
Brotherhood
NOUN:

1. The state or relationship of being brothers. Fellowship.
2. An association of men, such as a fraternity or union, united for common purposes.
3. All the members of a profession or trade.
I would say Webster's version explains it pretty good, but doesn't really touch the feeling that goes along with it. It really IS a Brotherhood. If you don't know what it feels like, you don't know what you're missing!

I know from experience that this IS a brotherhood. I have met some of the best people in the world through the brotherhood.

hmmmm....trolling in our forum ?
it's a profile thing, he wouldn't understand! :D I think the extreme sport analogy is close. I didn't find "organized" sports that interesting myself. used to skateboard as a kid; another passing fad. flew r/c too. definately not mainstream activity. After many years of flying I was bored with flying around doing point rolls, rolling circles, rolling loops, knife edge loops; been doing that stuff since the mid 80's. none of that required near as much concentration as a good hover. Now flying is interesting and challenging again!

a cult? well, don't quite know what that is, haven't been around long enough to learn it. But if it is somethin bad, the pro bro is not. what the pro bro IS though, is the most AWESHOMEST (yes it is a word, my friend and i use it all the time, root word aweshome) thing to ever happen to RC. In my opinion, the Profile Brotherhood is for the guys who stand there (or sit) and get bored by watching guys fly around in circles, or make a daring move by doing a roll, or even more daring, some inverted. You guys (hopefully me after i maiden my Katana) like to have some real fun. Bringing it low, rolling when you shouldn't be, upside down way to low, breaking rule #9, just doing what makes you either smile or laugh, or make others ponder the fact that a plane is even capable of doing such a thing. If i can join the pro bro's, i want to represent them well up here in the state of PA, and show these guys what you dudes are all about.

Long Live the Pro Bros,
Scott

P.S. Billy, you're AWESHOME!

Hey, what a cool website! Any site devoted to irreverance, planes, and beer is alright by me. Wanna know how I converted my friends to profile planes? I bought them each one. Hope there's room in this organization for a middle aged doctor. Instead of posting my planes like some of the guys have done, I'll list the beers I've tried (and can remember).
