How to build a strong lightweight fuse

Here is my method, I am not saying it is the best way or the only way, just my way :D

You need 1/2 lb to 3/4 lb density foam. It can be bought at Lowes I think it is used for insulating garage doors. It comes 6 sheets to a package for about 5 buxs. It is the lightest foam I have been able to find. It is 3/4 X 13 X 48.

You need some 1/32 aircraft ply and a few pieces of scrap 1/4 Balsa, maybe a few more pieces of wood from your scrap box.

The motor mount block is made of 1 piece 1/4 aircraft ply and 2 pieces 1/4 balsa, glue this together. Most of this chunk of wood will get cut out later on.

Glue the front spar doubler to the motor block. The spar doubler is 1/32 plywood.

slot your foam and install the motor block assembly. A normal bandsaw blade is just about the right thickness for cutting the spar slots.

This picture shows the motorblock installed and the remaider of the fuse cut off to install the 2 full lenght 1/32 ply spars.

these pics show the landing gear support block and the tailwheel support block installed. the tail wheel block is 1/4 balsa and the LG is 2 pieces of 1/4 aircraft ply with a piece of 1/4 balsa in the center. Also show the front balsa wood to finishing trimming the motor mount.

the finished foam core ready for sheeting. The slot running up the fuse is for the servo wires.

That's pretty cool Kenny.... Nice step by step....
I need to give credit where credit is due.

At the Nashville Pro Bro I flew a plane that made such an impression on me I had to buy one.( I have never bought a profile airplane, although I have had 10 or more, this might give you an idea of how much I was impressed.) The designer done a great job, I am just a stubborn SOB and had to build a foam fuse for it. I am changing nothin else cause I want my to fly like the one in Nashville did.

Thanks Paul for making the MOJO
what a kiss ass :D
Kenny - I checked your WWW & saw your other designs with the foam & balsa wings. Just want to let you know... You're my Hero... and Damnit!
Make sure to mention what glue(s) your using & how thick/thin you apply.
Thanks...

Thanks Kenny... Looks like it's gonna be a cool setup.... Final weight is gonna break 4 lbs for sure....

Spas - It's not my fault that you only get 3 months of flyable weather.... don't take it out on me!! :D :D

That's gotta suck.... Hopefully you have some nice gym's to fly foamy's in.... When I spent a week up there last March, I built a electric foam pizza box to fly around... Did a little flying at the local college and some in the hotel room!!

Spas, sorry to hear that dude, I tell ya what, I'll go out this evening and have a flight or 2 for you..
It's currently high 80's, partly cloudy with a lite breeze. I would be out flying right now but the tx battery is charging..
wanna move to florida with me spas? and not work and just rob a bank?
Looks good Kenny....evidently you got your work schedule back under control from what it was :D Makes my own pathetic efforts at putting a bird together look miserable.
Thanks for the compliments!

Spas , you might be right about the density I have never actually calculated it . I buy what is supposed to be 1lb density foam to cut my wing cores and this stuff seems considerably lighter, I was just guessing.

dhooks, my work schedule still sucks, 10+ hours a day and 6-7 days a week, I just took off last weekend and got to work on the fuse Sunday afternoon.

I like to tape and glue my sheeting with thin CA, just my preference.
