Prompted by latches post about hot glue....What is the prefered method for glueing servos in on your foamies? I dont like the idea of Ca or epoxy on my servos but since he mentioned that im rethinking the hotglue thing.

If you clean the foam with rubbing alcahol, I just use a good quality servo tape, seems to work fine on my Tribute
I've used a small amount of epoxy in the past with no problems. I've never had a servo come loose that was epoxied in place.

You don't need much. I just put a small dab on the mounting flanges, or the side.

Roughing up the gluing surface on the servo with sandpaper helps it to hold as well.
I just use a few dots of hot glue on the underneath side of the servo tabs. may take a bit more gluing in a single aileron servo depending on how well you cut the hole
I've been using hot glue for all of my foamy stuff, but I use the high temp hot glue on blue fan fold. Never had a glue failure.
Try UHU. Its great but can be rubbed off with some solvent off of your servo's.

Hot glue works too...but will melt some of the foam usually when I do it. Of course, you may want that since that means semi-permanent.

If I remember the instructions on the Raptor correctly, they said to use the low temp stuff with Depron.
I've been using Permatex Ultra Black RTV Silicone and so far I have not had any problem on foam.
Granted it takes a while to cure out but if you have to remove a servo it's not real bad to get off and one it's off you just roll off the silicone with your finger.
That's probably true. Even on FF it will melt the foam if too hot. I don't let the gun get 100% hot. Over time, I've gotten to the point where I can tell the right temp of the glue. When it gets too hot I unplug it and let it cool down.

I'm going to get a rotary dimmer switch and hook it up to an outlet so I can regulate the heat and keep the gun where I want. The high-temp hot glue won't soften as much in the sun as the low temp stuff will.
how about using a permanent-ish glue on a servo wrapped in tape? if you ever need to remove the servo, just cut the tape off of it.

CC thats kind of what do, i wrap the servo in one layer of reiforced straping tape then rough up the tape with 100grit paper and 5min epoxy it on the foam, more time consuming but solid and you can just peal off the tap when its done :D
I guess epoxy would come of a servo fairly well if you heated it a little bit first. I might try the tape wrap idea then epoxy though.
I just use a double sided tape but not the carpit suff, thats comes off too easy. For 1 aleron servo I cut a slot in the foam so that the servo fits in snug the I put clear tape on ether side making like a servo sandwich.

I wrap the servo with painters tape and use hot glue.. Don't hurt the servo and holds great..
I just use some foam-safe CA. I have used it for the hinges in an E-Sledge and to mount the servos and hold down the carbon fiber spars. It worked awesome, and if you are careful with it, it won't add much weight.
I've been just hot glueing mine on direct, what was Latch saying about it? I've never had a problem, but if I'm gonna, I'd like to head it off.
Check out the thread on the HLRaptor Gordo.

I had the elevator servo come loose during flight. Really sucked!

FWIW, this was the first time I've tried hot glue. I did have warnings that things weren't going to good. I was regluing the flying wires after just about every flight.
I did follow the instructions to the letter. I cleaned the servos with rubbing alcohol and I even roughed up the servo case where the glue would go to get it some more bite (and then recleaned with rubbing alcohol).

In my AC workshop, the hot glue holds great, but on the flightline in the Sept. Nashville sun it failed. Until someone shows me where I made a mistake, I won't be using hot glue again for certain on a servo mount.

For the guys who are making it work, what's the secret????

Thanks.
Thanks Latch. I wonder of it's the raptor and not the glue? I have glued the servos on all my faomies after the first one. It's VERY hard to get them off when I want, so I never even thought about one coming loose?????

That's a possibility Gordo, but my second Raptor is going together with Epoxy and Foam Safe CA.
I've been using hot glue on my foamy servos and haven't had a bit of trouble. It seems to work really well.
