Flyboz43 has really inspired me, with his AWESOME airbrush work, to try new techniques in covering.
I won the bid on a GATOR basketball Jersey on ebay, and it had this cool gator skin print on it. I thought,"man I bet that could be done on a profile".
So , I took a peice of posterboard , cut it down to 15X24 and started drawing. 2hrs later, I had that posterboard covered with gator scales. 2 days later I had cut out all these holes with and xacto knife. All total about 8hrs into makeing this stencil. I cut a peice of covering, dark yellow ultracoat the same size as the stencil, then took a can of orange lustercoat and sprayed away. I was really surprised at how well it looked when I took off the stencil. Looked like I was tanning gator hide.
I had orginally thought about covering the plane, then painting it with the stencil, but thought the stencil might get soft on me, so I decided to paint 15X24 sections at a time.
Showed this to some of the guys in memphis this past weekend. I had some concerns that the covering after it got stretched would crack or make the paint flake off, but to this point it the only thing I've noticed is, it smel different when I stick the heat-gun to it
Heres some picks of my progress so far. This is a Chinn Yak

Very nice, What paint did you use? Will it be clear coated? I've been thinking of airbrushing one of my planes.

the orange is lusterkote and the blue is what ever ultracoat paint is called. Its sprayed right outta the can onto the stencil

no I didnt scuff up the covering. This was not done with and AB, its sprayed directly outta the can onto the stencil and covering. I painted the blue , the day I did the covering and hrs later it was still tacky to the touch, infact, next day, its still a little tacky
