How long can you expect a gallon of fuel to sit around b4 it goes south.
I've been thinking about buying cases to save $$$. But i might have some fuel sitting around for a while.

I'd agree with Hooks. The 2 main culprits in fuel problems are heat and moisture, and I've heard that nitro is photo reactive too. I buy 2 or 3 cases at a time, keep them in the box 'til I need them, and use them fairly quickly. But they don't sit long, usually a month at most.
I did have a gallon+ of Meth sit for over a year in a sealed can, when I started flying the ST 3000 again I mixed up a gallon and didn't have a problem.
Then there are the 3 guys this year who "got back into the hobby" and had old fuel, all 3 were just struggling with engine problems, driving them and us crazy. All three were fuel problems, and were finaly convinced (2 with objections) to try some fresh fuel and VIOLA problem solved.
But fresh sealed fuel should last a very long time I would say.
I did have a gallon+ of Meth sit for over a year in a sealed can, when I started flying the ST 3000 again I mixed up a gallon and didn't have a problem.

I'm still mixing up fuel from components I bought over eight years ago and my TT engines seem to like it just fine.
I tend not to mix up my fuel until I'm ready to use it and only mix about a gallon at a time because I'm not so sure that premixed fuel will last as well as the individual components.
Myself and a couple of others are considering going thirds on a 44 gallon drum of methanol, that ought to last us a month or two_

Yes Hooks is right, A dry basement is a great bet, I have some fuel that is 5 years old stored right, be fine and new from the hobby shop be crap, I order case lots direct, and have had good luck with RedMax, but Cooper's Pro Bro blend is my next kind to try.dhooks said:Store it in a dark place thats fairly cool ( read basement ) an it can last years.

Yes, I do have comment on fuel shelf life. Hooks is correct, keep it in a cool dry place in its box or out of direct sunlight with the cap closed tightly and shelf life is nearly indefinate.
Sometimes, if castor oil is in the fuel, you can get some castor snowflakes after it sits for a bit. If that happens, just give the bottle a good shake and they are back in solution, that is not a cause for fuel degradation.
Nitro is photoreactive in its natural state, once it is diluted with methanol and oils, it takes a lot longer to destabalize with sunlight. So don't fear about having your jug of 10% or 15% fuel in the sun all day at the field, just don't store it in the direct sunlight when not at the field. If you have fears of sunlight degradation of nitro, just throw a light colored cloth over the bottle at the field.

I found some unopened gallon containers in a box between moves that had been in there for about 8 years after being purchased. No problem at all..if anything it was better than the freshly bought stuff. Still had the little red stoppers in the gallon containers and no light due to the cardboard box they were packing in.
Here's one for ya. I won a gallon of fuel at a funfly in early August. From what I understand...the club buys a barrel of redmax and fills used gallon jugs as needed. After they break the seal on the barrel...I have no idea how long the stuff sat before they filled up the jugs. That's what I got....a refilled gallon jug of this stuff. I haven't burned it yet. I'm thinking I might just blend it off since I don't really trust it very much.
I don't know about that one? 55 gal, if they filled all the jugs at once, it would depend on the quality of the seal on the refilled jug's, I would use it up soon.cropdusterdave said:Here's one for ya. If thats true I wouldnt trust the fuel too much....but hey run a tank an see what happens......if its junk you arent out nothing.
