Foamy Schmoamy... they're all the same anyway.

Before I do this - let me put my flame suit on... bend, step, step, pull, reach, stuff, reach stuff, shimmy, shimmy, exhale, HOLD IT... zip... aaaah.

OK - I don't yet own a foamy - want one bad. Also - I'm the type to think & even over-think things... especially when dropping $. I've been thinking about the various fllat-wing foamy designs I've seen so far. Aside from the huge variations in color scheme, and mono wing vs bipe - there's one blindingly obvious thing they all have in common. They're all basically similar in design - well I suppose by that definition ALL planes are similar. But how much difference can a slightly different profile - or a slightly different wing & tail - make on a non-foiled plane? If it were possible to fly 2 different foamys blindfolded, do you think you could tell them apart? Is one REALLY better than another - or is it the perception that one is better? On the other end of this... Can we expect 2 identical planes to perform identically? It'd be an interesting experiment for somebody with the inventory to try. It'd have to be indoor - to eliminate the wind variable. What other measurable criteria could be checked?

They are way different. I started my foamy career with a Trident, a knock-off of the Tribute. It flew pretty good, but didn't roll too fast. So I put bigger ailerons on it. Didn't help much. So I moved the hinge line up (cut some of the fixed part of the wing off) 1 1/2" and made the ailerons bigger yet. NOW it rolled!

So then it ws on to the tail feathers, but now on a Yak. I started out with bigger ailerons, but the elevator and rudder needed enlarging as well. So made them bigger..and bigger. Finally got it to fly good.

Then added a cross braced fuse. Some feel that besides making the fuse stiffer, the cross fuse also enhances the pitch control.

I guarantee you this: Fly a box stock H9 Tribute, then fly a ChuckFlyer. You WILL be able to tell not just some difference, but A LOT of difference.
I´m sure that Chuck is rigth but I´m still waiting some dude to kit the CF.
Here is almost imposible to find the Depron so my only hope is to buy a kit from it.
I want to give myself as a christmas present the right equipment for a CF.
Hope the wait isn´t to long.
I thought the same thing when I first started with foamys. started with a 3dx and have been trhough about a billion foamies in a year and they all fly very different. flew the chuck flyer for the first time the yester day and it by far beats them all chuck got somthin good with it.

Yep, what Chucky said!!!

And let me add that this fits right in line with the way glow planes work too. Take the profile Edge, You got EF Edge, Sledge, OMP, and Goldberg. They are all Edges, but very different, up to RADICALLY different. Tweak the tail, thrust line, wing plan, wing area.....sometimes a little goes a LONG LONG way in making a plane fly better or worse or just very different!
I spend a lot of time trying to find great flying foamies for HL. I have found that every plane does different things well. They all vary greatly and they way you tweak them can enhance or kill them as well. I'm currently looking for a "pure" 3D plane. A plane that does everything well.
Of all the foamies I've flown... I like the E Sledge the best... and the Chuck flyer a bunch too... The bipe the cookville guys put out is pretty damn cool too...

Well you dudes need to download them free ChuckFlyer plans!

And Pauly is a *** for liking the E-Sledge better!! :D :D

(Just kidding, Jeff! Pauly is a *** anyway  )

I didn't build a "straight" chuck flyer yet, but Bill and I colaborated on an eSledge with Chuck flyer modifications. The result was really great, and I've had several already.
One thing to bear in mind with a foamy..... If you're not happy with the design... Just keep flying it... They disintegrate in a few days... You'll have lots of opportunities to build more of them!! Something about the fear factor being less than zero... You'll have tons of fun!!!!
Big differences... BIG DIFFERENCES!!!

What everyone said is quite true. Different planes suit different people's styles, and what they want to do at the time. Some torque roll better, some harrier better overall, or better one way or the other....

Since you have not flown one yet, I would suggest either a Chuckflyer, or an E-Sledge. I have flown both (I'm flying and E-Sledge type thingy right now) and both are great airplanes. Chuck did a great job on the Chuckflyer and it may be a little more 'smooth' for a first time foamy flyer....
Who votes for a MOJO foamie!!!!!! :D :D
I like the idea of cutting my own - fan-fold - foamy. I'm leaning toward a Chuck Flyer. Sounds like the e-quivilant to my Burrito. I'm about half-way there - saving from each paycheck. Maybe I'll place an order for my b-day at the end of this month. I'll be twenty-eighteen & proud of it - and damnit.

I guess it makes sense that the subtle differences in air-frames would maka a big difference in flight.

I would've got me some stick-time today - if I had a foamy.

Thanks for the discussion Bros...
Tater, you sure opened yourself up for some bashing. OK, I will take my shot. By now, it is evident they are different. I have done 4 designs since last winter in the foamy arena, edge, extra, cap and yak 54. They all do great 3D, but each is somewhat different and they are all my designs. I am now laser cutting my foamies, if you want to try one I will send it to you for kit cost $40 and I will pay the shipping just so you can fly one of the better performing foamies. I want it clear I am not saying mine are the best, there are some good ones out there but I do think I have some good fliers. Jeff Williams
Now Jwilliams when are you going to get a website ???? And if you already did why do I not know about it???

Hey Jeff how bout some info....Size, what motor are they set up for etc..
I have to agree with the above couple of posts!
You've been cutting foamies and haven't made them readily available to those of us here!! Blasphemous!

We do need more info and maybe a few pics as well.
If some of you guys like the e sledge, youve really got to try one of jeffs e yaks, it's less twitchy and a touch better in every way. Ive got em both set up and ready to go right now if anyone wants to stop by 8)
Auger said something about comparing the Tribute to a Chuck Flyer. Many here have said stuff similar.

To me, the same comparisons could be made on any profile. "They are all the same", right? Well, to someone who had little experience with them, the do all look the same. For example, if they were all covered in solid white, I'm not sure I could tell the difference in the Morris the Knife, Lanier Pro Twister, and Burrito. Now the Bros who have seen them all could, right?

Until you have flown a "good" foamy, the differences will not be clear.

My first foamy flight was the Chuck Flyer. A real one, cut and built by Chuck. It may still be the most maneuverable plane I've ever flown. It also could slow down and harrier as solid as a rock. In a minute or so, I was dragging the rudder through the grass. I'm no 3D Guru, but I could do it with that one. After that, the Tribute was OK, but way different. Why, I don't know.

All the same, no. Try a Thunder Tiger Fun Fly ARF, then get your hands on a Jeff Williams Sledge. Not the same. Get your hands on a Chuck Flyer and a Tribute, you will feel the same.

just flew the shit out of my Chuckflyer again yesterday, and absolutely love that freaking foamy. The E-Sledge flies good too, but I think the Chuckflyer is wilder. Wish Pauly would start kitting that baby (hint hint) :D
