Ever have one of those days?

Well, Saturday was a great day for flying. Temp in the 60's. light wind, just unbelievable for January. So, you know I hit the field with a couple of birds ready to go.

Well, first flight I take up the Magic Extra. This is my 'learn basic 3D' beater bird. About 3-4 minutes into the first flight something goes wrong. Heck it won't roll left for anything. I coax it in and land. Taxi right up to see the left aileron drooped at a good 30 degrees. I kill the engine and start working the controls. Right aileron still working, but left is frozen. Now get this, about 10 seconds after I land, with a witness (who came over to see what was wrong) the right aileron freezes up!

To shorten the story, further investigation reveals that BOTH servos shorted out electrically and one was a dead short dropping battery voltage almost 1.5 volts when plugged in! These were fairly new Hitec HS77BB's running on a 5-cell NiMh pack. I guess they don't like the 6 volts? Anybody else seen this?

Oh but it gets better……

I break out the old 4-star 40. Even if I can't practice 3D I can at least get some quality 'stick time' on this great day.

Well second flight- deadstick out of nowhere and this engine NEVER deadsticks. It's an old Magnum Pro 45 FSR I found still NIB and has really been a reliable powerhouse. End result, it sucked the cage out of the rear main bearing and right into the combustion chamber, trashed the engine.

So I went home. What a day…

Man that suck especially now that the weather is crap for the next couple of days. At least spring is coming up.

I got a Sig Cap 2nd hand. Put Moki 1.8 on it. Took it out flew 3 times. Brought it home and used my Orbit to top of my Duralite via the charge switch (non Duralite protected socket) and Orbit thought 3 cells instead of two BOOM-BOOM 3 foot flames. So for the first time I rebuild the fuse from scratch. Went great. Put everything back together and programmed the radio for low and high rates. Go to field everything checks out. End up taking off on full throw rates. Well anytime I breath on the elevator stick it snaps. Well two snaps later there was the ground. I must say the Cap fit in my truck much easier after that flight.

Yep, the coming weekend looks dubios at best and the days are still too short to work the 'fly after work' angle.

Oh well, between replacing servos and putting a new engine in the 4-star (and finishing my OMP edge) I've got plenty of bench flying to do.

Now that's harsh.

The Saito 91 is mounted and I got the elevator, throttle and rudder servos all mounted and ready. Working on modifying the wing for standard size servos, It's set up for 225's and I don't want to buy more of them since I have plenty of standard size servos to use. It will be ready by this weekend, hope the weather cooperates.

I got 10 planes in the garage in various stages of construction/needs repair and only 2 flyable at the moment. I've got to get busy
