engine?

Hi all, I am looking for an engine for a burrito. I'm looking at either an irvine 53 or an O.S 50. Any opinions on these engines? What has everybody found to be the best engine for this plane? Thanks.

Those are the 2 best choices you could make. You can't go wrong either way.

I have the os 50sx on my KatanaP. It accelerates straight up like a rocket and hovers with no problem.
I'm finishing up my Burrito and plan to put a Magnum 46XLS (just like OS 46 FX) on it. Will it be underpowered? Should I be looking for a .50 or .53 ?

I have never had the Magnum motor but if it runs as well as the OS46 you will be fine.

We have about 5 of the OS50's being used in our club I have never saw a problem with any of them. I have had mine the longest about an year now and it still runs like new. I was puting 4 or 5 flights a day on it until workgot so busy.

Man, I don't want to start anything, but the Magnum IS NOT like OS, I mean NOT even close!!!!

Both the OS 50 and the Irvine are great, I'm a huge fan of the OS 50. I have huge time on mine in 3 years, finaly just plain wore it out. I don't really know if one is better, but with the cost of the Irvine about the same now, I'd stick with the OS. But my Irvine 25 is totally amazing too.
Gordo could you send me your worn out 50? :D i'll pay shipping :D

Absolutely, I've been gonna ask if anyone wanted it. But if you're wanting to fix it, it'll cost you. It's been crashed several times and the carb got messed up a bit, the sleeve and ring need replaced, and the head has a small crack, I REALLY got my time out of it!!
I have a Satio 82 on my Burrito, plenty of power and very dependable.

I have an OS 46 FX on my 4lb. 13oz sledge and it does just fine. I do not believe you would have a problem with the OS 50. For about 35 bucks less you can get the OS 46 AX and they are good motors too.....They have more power than the FX I have. I know Stano has an AX on his Katana and it does not have any vertical problems.

Thanks Gordo.... That's so true.

I feel so sorry for the people with Magnums at my field. They're ALWAYS dinking with them - more often than not because of air leaks.

Sure an OS 50 is about $40 more than a 52XLS, but I think reliability is worth every nickel. I felt sorry for a buddy of mine this summer. He started up flying again after a 10 year hiatus. The hobby shop owner told him to get a Magnum .46 and a 4 Star. I did the first flight on the 4* and it flew great, but the engine sucked big time. Air leaks everywhere and barely flew good enough to get the flight in and of course landed dead stick. I told him I wasn't dinking with it and to take it to the hobby shop owner to fix the bugs. He was happy as a clam to have a new plane, then to see the disappointment because of the engine was sickening....

OS engines purr like kittens right out of the box! I have nothing to gain from OS by saying that, but I say that because I've enjoyed 16 years of trouble free flying because of OS engines.

I have an OS 46 AX on my Mustang and I love it. Tons of power and no hassles. I also have two GMS 47's on my TopCap and my Knife and I can't complain at all about them. Ran both last night and got over 12,500 rpm with stock mufflers running 12 X 4 APC props on 10% fuel. Can hand start all of them with one or two flips and never have to mess with the needles. I have run OS engines for years and couldn't be happier with them. I just got a really good deal on these GMS's and couldn't pass it up. Turned out to be a good buy.
Yeah, I learned a long time ago that going cheap in this hobby is penny wise and dollar foolish   .

My flying time is faaaarrrr more valuable than a few dollars saved.

Jeff
OK thanks. I'll try the 46 first and move up to a OS 50 or Irvine 53 if necessary.

I must be one of the lucky ones. My Magnum 46 runs perfectly and is identical in performance to my old OS 46FX before it blew its liner after about 20 hours of flying. I have heard the Magnum 52 was big trouble.
True... I have not used the Magnum for 3D. It does have a nice idle and transition. The midrange seems OK but I guess I'll find out more when I put it in the Burrito.

I have had good results using Enya and TT 2-strokes and Saitos for 3D. I do like the 2-stroke throttle repsonse a little better than the Saito.

I'm an enigma with regard to OS engines. I have had a 46FX and a 46LA. The 46FX was great for the short time it lasted. The 46LA is just a POS. Of course Tower says that the peeled liner was my fault. I would rather not give OS a third chance to screw me.

I don't mind spending money on an enigne - I just don't want to spend a lot and get a bad engine. Who distributes Irvines now that Sig dropped them?

Again very true, I have 3 very good mag's but I did do a lot of messin with 2 of them to get them to run good, They are a great "engine kit" :D some work and they run fine.
But buy quality and just fly it!
