So,thinking about buying a trailer to haul my planes,5x8 or 6x10 since i have midsize truck. Dont think i will use it that much,so hard to decide but these longer trips be nice. What you guys think, what size, fold down ramp at back or swing doors.Any thoughts would be a help, big box made for back of truck would work, with side doors, big planes take a lot of space. :dk:

Thing I have seen that I think is a good idea is get one with fold down door but then relocate the hinges to the top of the door and install struts on it. Then you have a built in awning off the back of it.
Just got rid of my 5x8 and got a 6x10. 5x8 was a bit tight for my taste with 20 cc one piece airplanes. Mine was too short to stand up inside as well. New one fixed that problem. It has a fold down door. I thought I wanted double rear doors but the trailer place said very few want them and it really cuts into resale value. It may be different in other parts of the country but trailers are near impossible to find right now. They're blaming it on COVID. The only way that makes sense to me is that the axles and frames may be imported. I found the only one on a lot anywhere close to me. I've got it pretty well outfitted now for hauling planes but is 100% ready for any other mission instantly.
Or if you have the time you can build your own

Rc is a simple hobby, just need a trailer to haul the stuff around. That trailer you built looks neat, and i do have many boat trailers. Pays to ask.
If you have a boat trailor with tandem axels your cargo won't get tossed around as much. Maybe take a few leafs out of the springs would soften the ride as well. I have a trailor but would love to have another enclosed one for planes
I have owned 3 enclosed trailers. First was a 6X12 cargo ramp built by Haulmark, not a good trailer, screws started coming out everywhere, it leaked just not very good. Second was a 6X10 with barn doors, too small and I hated the barn doors but it was built better and I will explain that. My current trailer is a 6X12 with ramp door, it has been OK but again not the best build quality. I had a local trailer manufacturer build it as they had a good reputation but again, it has a few issues but nothing major. Things like screws backing out because they were not put in straight in the first place, a common theme on my first trailer. Also my first trailer had the framing on 24" centers, never do that, get 16" centers everywhere. Ramp versus barn doors, ramp for me. It also allows me to move a lawn mower if needed or other things I need moved the ramp door is much more useful. In the end, I would advise a 6X12 with a ramp door and 16" centers for framing, also get interior lights, jacks, vents on the side that open and close, avoid the roof vents, LED exterior lights and think about color, I would avoid the darker colors and if at all possible keep indoors or at least under some sort of covered/roofed area while not in use. Good luck.

I thought these trailers were water tight for life,no leaks guaranteed. Bet dark colors get hot inside, roof vents are asking for leaks, side vents be helpfull. Ramp door nice if need to move small things plus wear my legs out if going in and out a lot. Any one tried something else i be over looking. Got a van,1988,40,000 miles but been sitting many years, would take 1,500 to get going, then tags and insurance. Just dont think in the end its worth it. Open for thoughts, you guys with trailers, are they worth it,looks like 6x10 with v nose be what i looking for, about 3,000 down here. Shure hold a lot of planes.
Something i found on boats, adding shocks, cheapess or small used ones takes out a lot of bounce on trailers. Easy to do and works. :tu: :tu:

I had a 3-rail motorcycle trailer at one time with airshocks, worked great. Adjustable ride depending on weight.

I have a Stealth 5X10, all Aluminum. Very light.
I have barn doors, which are nice as I don't haul much other than planes and if I do it sits low enough.
Get the trailing link axle for light weight hauling.
My trailer is of very good quality. I got it in 2012. No leaks or failures of any kind.
Another suggestion that I am glad I followed was to get the biggest front side door available. It is very handy.
I built removable racks in mine. I can haul four .40 and smaller birds in the front, and 4 .60 size birds in the back.

I thought hanging the planes on the wall would give more room, with arms and bungy straps,i am thinklng flat against the wall. Like your trailer, still undecided about rear doors. Getting a well built trailer, well, how do you weed them out, most want you to buy, then wait while they build. Guess need drive 200 miles, see what they got, then order. You be right, they should not leak.
I have barn doors and kinda wish I had a a pull down now after having it a while. Also, wish I had gotten a side door that latches from inside. I had another trailer for a little while that had a ramp and side door and after I took my stuff out and set up, could sleep inside. The trailer I kept, I can't do that…

Yes, that is a more efficient way of getting more planes in there. What I have in mine takes up a lot of room.

I hope Cartman and C/F comment in this threat as they both have the most amazing RC trailers!
Both of those guys have nearly full kitchens and sound systems that would blow your home sound system away!
And also to mention that they get a ridiculous amount of planes in them.
They use PVC tube and pipe insulation racks that hold a LOT of planes for their size.
C/F has planes hung throughout his trailer. Lots of birds in there!
I saw cartmans trailer at seff,to much to take in a quick look. There was everthing one could ask,and more. And lots of tec stuff hanging on the walls, planes and more. A pro bros man cave :tu: :tu: for shure.
I think you meant C/F,...............

Count me in for barn doors, EVERY concession trailer is barn doors EVERY cargo trailer is ramp would be more accurate. I have Harbor freight aluminum ramps best of both. truth be told the back 2-3' of an open ramp is brutal in sun based on ceiling height. Then inclimate weather a ramp is 100% open or closed, barn doors not so much 1 closed and one open or open enough to keep down on the winds and slip inside. I used marine grade spar varnish on my doors and dont worry about them getting wet.

I still own my 6X10 "BLACK" Horton Hauler first trailer, 36" side door, single barn door, Brakes. having one white and one black I think colors being a difference in temp is an urban legend. Google why radiators are black for fun sometime, PHOTOSYHTNESIS?? Draws heat to the outer surface, kinda crazy subject matter that was debated loooong ago when a black marker on a brushed motor in a BLADE CP heli was said to make the motor run cooler. just sayin :tu:

My current 8.5X14 Wht LOOK trailer, I drive an RV and a custom boat trailer so a trailer being yellow line to yellow line is a non issue for me, I preffer the shortest, widest, tallest, adding a roof line drag profile is less of decision than parking at local food joints, beside the roof when done right becomes another wall when it get up high enough. My next one will be as tall as motor home and still only 8.5X14. Interesting bit of info when searching trailers if one only filters for concession trailers you will find even a 5X10X9' roof line cause they stack needed items up top.

A+++++ on the 15" centers, and look into the aluminum skin thickness they all will stress fracture over time and this subject is how much time is in the hour glass.

When I travel outside of town I will put on the weight distrubuting hitch gear as it really cuts down on the trailer tossing when traveling this vast country in need of $4T in infrastructure for crumbling roads and bridges.

Some other thought on trailers,

The reason trailer lots are all over "PRE-PLANDEMIC", is because of the the high profit margins of the unsuspecting shopper. You do get what you pay for and there is a trailer for every budget need, I would suggest you go to this vendor https://www.trailernut.com/ and do a custom trailer build excersize.

There is so many drop down menus of every item concerning custom build it really will make you more knowledgeable on what your hard earn dollars are buying "or not buying" on a lot shopping locally.
My mixup,cf be the one. I never thought of height, good point. Truth be,most of us wont use our trailers a bunch, but some will, its good to have all the info and insites to think on. From mild to wild,a suv gets tight if more than a few planes to be stuffed in. And some will use them to move other stuff. The wife will say, lets get new couch, you say might rain, she say, well you got a trailer, how can you win. Say it ant so.  Keep them thoughts a coming.

Well,a lot of good thoughts guys,i think the height being the best,a extra foot tall gives lots of planes stuck to roof a neat way to transport them. That is,if you can build that many. Plus, get them out of shop. I worry the heat may be a problem. Dark cars get hotter, bet dark trailers do to. MO said, side door with lock like a camper, open from inside if wanted, that would be nice, wonder if i could get the wife to sleep in it,only if there be a poto potty. Thanks for the help guys. :tu: :tu:
