I plan on starting my e taco in about a week and still dont know about what motor combo I want. I have the prices on the lehner and the axi. (ouch )
Chuck Im leaning toward the lehner with gearbox, what modifications did you have to do for the 74t gear. That is what troy is recommending. Where can I find the apc e props? Has anyone flown both the axi and lehner combos and know the difference, or others. Does anyone know of some lightweight CF gear for this lil pup to eliminate the heavy wire. Any suggestions and hints will be appreciated, covering.. horns.. etc
Thanks in advance

You won't have to modify anything for the 74 tooth spur..it is large enough diameter to mesh with the pinion as-is. In fact the 72 tooth meshes fine with no mods. It's just the 70 tooth (or smaller) that won't clear....the motor can hits the gearbox before the mesh is correct.

I don't know why he would be recommending the 74 tooth, I wouldn't go any larger than the 72 tooth..in fact the 70 tooth is my favorite, all you have to do is sand about 1/2 mm off the gearbox to get the 70 tooth to work. I used a disk sander and it took about 30 seconds. Unless he is talking about the 1020/14, instead of the 1020/15....then the 74 tooth would be a honking ratio.

E props are very common, I get mine at the LHS. I am running the 13 X 6.5E now. I was spinning the 12X6 SF about 1100 RPM past red line for a SF prop, I spin the 13 X 6.5E at 7000, about 500 RPM more than the 12X6 SF and almost as much thrust and about 4 Amps less draw. I am gonna pick up a 14X7 E next time and try it, I bet it won't draw more than 32 Amps or so.

The wire gear is not that heavy..I mean, I was at 25oz AUW with the wire gear, about 7.5 oz wing loading. You might shave a few grams off with some $$ CF gear, but the Lehner set-up is so lite I was borderline tail heavy as it was. I had lightening holes marked on the solid balsa top fuse piece, but didn't cut them out since I didn't want to move the CG any farther aft.

Get some DuBro Featherlight wheels, I used 1 3/4" These are light suckers.
I used Goldberg short control horns. 2/56 wire pushrods with ply stand-offs.

A few pics of my build starting on Page 6 of this thread:

I'm currently building a couple more, I can take pics of any portion of the build if you need some detailed help. Also, I still have the carcass from the first one, I can take pics of any of it as well.
