The Guy at the end said it best!
did you ever see the russians air drop big stuff? they have the rocket assist chuts, seems like a good idea after watching that
I saw a lot of LAPES in the service and I'll tell ya one thing.
You haven't lived until you see a 60ton tank bounce!!!
The pilot came in a bit high and when the skid came out it was still around 40 feet too high! The skid took an immediate nose dive and hit at around a 30 degree angle and it just went downhill from there. Talk about one HELL of a mess!
Awful expensive way to get those exploded view drawings!
Leave it to the fuckin' Air Force to screw up a perfectly good load of shit.
I saw some really stupid shit while I was in Viet Nam about a gillion years ago. They dropped a tank of Agent Orange out of the back of a C-130 once. Man did it ever defoliate the shit out of the jungle, about 40 ft deep and a mile wide.
It will be 2150 before anything grows in that spot again.
Frankly, the tax dollars I spent for that entertainment were worth every penny! :D

As ex Air Force Viet Nam era (not in country) I represent that remark

I was a Crew Chief, I saw a big cargo plane (not sure the C#) overrun the taxi way onto the tarmak, problem was this was in the desert and is was like 120 deg. and the plane ssssssaaank into the tar. So they bring a crane to lift it out and it starts to sink we were laughing our butts off, then the plane is tipping to one side and all hell breaks loose, they have us evacuate the flight line the sent us to a large hanger to get a briefing, this plane aparantly had some nukes onboard, they said no sweat they are safe as they sweated bullets, they said stay here it is safer
Ah the good old days
Working in communications, we were right off the flight line, when the little slant eyed fuckers decided to lob a few rockets in on top of us. Things weren't too bad until one landed in the cockpit of a fully loaded
F-100. 1200 rounds of 20mm cannon ammo cooked off spraying large bullets every where, full load of fuel burned and 2 500 lb bombs cooked off. All this happened inside one of the concrete bunkers the planes were parked in. Reduced that concrete to chalk. We had LARGE bullet holes all over the flight line and through our shop. Now that will make your butthole pucker real tight.

Did you see the movie of the C-130 doing its' low altitude, high speed, rear door open, cargo drop? The load hung up inside the plane and drug it right into the ground. Made a hell of a hole in the runway.

God Bless the U.S. Military.

One thing you do have to give the USAF pilots credit for.
That thing has got to get squirley when they drop the skids like that...
It's gotta be hell on the CG!
Your just above stall speed as your cg shifts rearward, then the canopy opens and drags the sled out the rear door and all the sudden your nose heavy again! Gotta be quite a pucker factor!
