Building table??

805 Views 16 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  dhooks
I have a delema here. Now that I have the airplanes back I need a place to build. I can take over a small part of my boys room but I need a way to keep Dr. Destructo away. My wife is suggesting something like a roll top desk.

It does not have to be permanent as I only need to finish framing a burrito, and an OMP Yak. A MOJO if I can sweet talk pauly out of one.

Im guessing you ll have to drop some serious coin for a good rolltop? On the other hand if you get a WallyWorld special you could always put another piece of wood on the desktop to sturdy it up.
When I lived in a place with limited space I bought a wright building board It measured 14x48 It is portable and very well built has 3/4 cork, you can put it up on shelf when not building. I dont think they sell them anymore but since I am not using it anymore I would let you have it if you are interested. It is in very good shape.

I built a 3/4" thick (particle board) x 36" x 72" build table. I made adjustible feet with 5/16" carriage bolts, nuts & T-nuts. I can slide it to the cener of my garage - under the fluorescet light - & level it up. The carriage bolts have the rounded head - they slide OK on the concete floor - but stay put till I give the table a good shove. Then when I'm done I slide it back to the wall under the cabinets. For a pin surface - I borrowed an extra celing tile from our basement & used the backside. Now if I could just heat the garage for this winter...

Can you keep the kids out of the garage - if you have a garage?
You can also use a 24" x 72" hollow core door.. only about $18 at home depot... you could carry it in from the garage or just put it up on a couple of saw horses.... Blue foam works good for pinning too... Or drywall or a ceiling tile....
Or you can take a door off of the hinges I used my closet door for awhile.
Make a table you can raise with 4 pulleys like some guys have when they put a ping pong table on top of their pool table. Just make sure Jr. can't reach the release rope

Now that's a good idea. One other option that I have come about is to use the closet and close the doors when I am done.

I miss my garage :( The airplanes take up more space than I remeber.
I've been using one of those lunch tables from costco. $40, folds and can be stored anyway, including under the bed.

I don't worry too much about level...because none of my planes last that long.

If you do this - make sure you can keep the table from swinging while you work on it. And you may need to sub-divide the pulleys to get enough mechanical advantage to actually pull it up. So you'll really need 8 pulleys & all the fancy hardware to connect everything up.
 Ask me about my truck topper sometime.

So how would you keep foam or drywall flat? Do you put it over your work table or are certain types flat and stiff? That last part didnt sound right :(
A hollow core door has some support in the middle.. It'll stay flat for a few builds..... Use a solid core door if you want it to last forever.... But I thought you said this was a quick fix??
Ive been thinking I need to make some kinda board to carry in my truck so I can build on the road. Ya all giving me some ideas for that too.

Why don't you just put a tonneau cover on your truck? That'd be a perfect build table. Those vinyl ones would probably hold pins well too.

Im talking about a big truck....the 18 wheel variety.

Damn! I'm starting to not like the flavor of my own foot so much.

In that case - consider getting some netting. You'll need some way of keeping your un-finished build from sliding off the table during the drive. I bet you could lay some netting over the whole table - then bungee cord between the major assemblies & keep everything nailed down. Or just leave stuff pinned down - duh...

Tell you what - gimme the specific measurements of the spot you're thinking of using & I'll damned-well design you a armoire with a flip-up table & a shelf unit to boot!

I'm still feeling bad about the whole tonneau cover shit.
