Been around awhile but still new to most of you

Hi guys,
Just wandering around the forum here and spotted the new ProBro thing here so I thought I'd write a little bit since most of you may have seen a post or two of mine but have never met me. My name is Michael and I've been flying RC on and off now for about 3 years. The key words there are on and off. I had just gotten pretty good and comfortable on a trainer when I had to stop flying for awhile because of some personal stuff. I stayed up on things on the web as much as I could and that's when I found the ProBro's on RCU. I started flying again and got to a "second airplane". I bought a Burrito from Paul also and got to fly it about two times before more stuff came up that cut my flying time off. My brother ended up with cancer and while I tried to help him battle through that and just be supportive in the family I really couldn't find time to fly. He passed away on June 15th 2004 and it seems I've been spinning my wheels ever since. I live on a lake so I bought a Mariner seaplane to try and get some stick time that way. Crashed it beyond repair on the maiden flight. Don't know exactly what happend but at least I was able to salvage my engine and radio gear. I also bought a foamy but ended up messing it up before it ever even flew. I've got another Burrito and a FF Taco I got from Paul at the last Perry show sitting here sealed in the boxes untouched. I'm really frustrated lately. I want to fly and learn 3D but my field is an hour away and I never can seem to find the time to get there. It seems like everything I touch these days when it comes to planes turns to crap. The only enjoyment I'm geting out of the hobby right now is via the internet hanging out on RC sites. Any of you guys ever get in a rut like this? Sorry, I'm supposed to be introducing myself but I guess I just needed to vent a little. At this rate I'll never learn 3D and I'm wondering if I could even succesfully get my trainer in the air. So here you have the would be Sky_Dancer, ProBro #614 although I'm not livin up to the name and number. Really bummed out.

Sorry to hear about your brother.

One thing that came to mid about learning 3D and not having time to go out and fly is to get a flight sim. Aerofly-Pro is an AWESOME simulator that will let you learn 3D when the weather is lousy, all your planes are busted, late at night, etc, etc.

I think I might speak for everyone that I hope you stick with it and try to go to some of the Pro-Bro meets and put a face to all the names here.
I have Realflight G2. I didn't know about Aerofly when I bought it or I might have opted for it instead. I downloaded a plane from here for Realflight but I haven't had any luck getting it to hover. Seems like I just about get it and then it wants to flop over on it's back or over to one side. BTW I read your thread about the guy holding your planes hostage. I was really glad to hear you got them back.
Michael
That's the way the real one's hover. It's a lot harder than it looks like when you see guys doing it. So if it's flopping over, just stick with it!
It helped me to add alittle wind and hover or harrier into it just trying to manipulate the throttle to hold in one spot you will get the hang of it stop thinking about it and just move the sticks your thumbs will get in line
Maybe this is a stupid question but what control surface keeps it from flopping over? I want to think rudder for some reason but when it flops to one side I fool with ailerons. Nothing seems to work. I feel like this will probably be like most new things I've ever tried to learn. Can't do it so keep practicing...can't do it so practice more...can't do it so practice more...BOOM!... all of a sudden one day you can just do it. At least that's the way it seems to go when I learn things.
Michael
That's about it. Use the rudder a lot, that's probably gonna be the hardest thing to get used to. It'll come to you, just keep plugging away and cussing the guys who make it look so easy!
Sims are the best way to learn to 3D but if you have all the gear for a foamy there also great. FMS the newest version like 3. something is good for a free sim and there are cheap interfaces that you can buy. If you get lots of stick time youll get it aventually.
Like the other guys, I too am sorry to hear about your brothers' passing.
As far as the time to do anything with the planes. just stop trying to push on it and let it happen. Things will line out eventually and you will be able to get back in the saddle. I've got a Morris Knife on the bench that needs about three more hours to finish and I just can't seem to get my butt out there to the garage to do it. Went flying today and got some good stick time hovering my TopCap. I actually did ONE TR today HOORAAYY for me.
Try spending about 30 minutes a day on the plane. That ain't much time and you will be surprised how much you can get done in 30 minutes. Next day, another 30 minutes and so on. Listen to me, I can't even take my own advice. Ha Ha.
Anyhow, good luck, and I hope things turn around for you.
You can learn some basic 3D on G2. BUT, aerofly Pro is much more realistic (IMHO) for 3D. A couple of months of regular nightly work on AFP combined with an OMP Edge got me over the hump and into true 3D.

The first time you pull off an eye-level hover right out in front of you, now that's a great feeling.

It takes a lot of work, but it's worth it. But the work never stops, and really that's the fun of it. First hover, then harrier, then TR, maybe high Alpha knife, elevators, blenders. Then the really challenging stuff, inverted harriers, rollers and more.

And BTW: You WILL bust up some birds along this path. But you gotta get back on the horse and keep going!

I started with RealFlight G2 also... I couldn't hover at all... just fall out of the sky.. I kept at it.. with the jibes from my wife... "crash and burn... crash and burn".. but I still kept with it.. Now I can hover several of the planes on G2.. and I fly foamies mostly.. I can hover them now also.. I think foamies are the easiest way to learn.. they are cheap.. airframes anyway.. and you tend to try more with them.. Hot Glue and tape.. all you need to repair them... lol... Some of my "buddies".. kid me about the Prop bird I hit with my truck... all the orange feathers in the bed of the PU.. That's where I throw the broken ones.. don't know why.. just did.. I have a good supply of props..lol..

Keep up the trying... don't give up.. it will come to you when you least expect it..
