Gauging interest for 1st EVO Cap 50 kit run

PostPosted: Tue Oct 01, 2013 9:14 pm

I had a ton of interest in the EVO Cap 50 at nashbro this year and many pilots expressed a desire to get their hands on a kit. I've decided to go ahead and do a first run of them and I would like to gauge just how many kits I will be making.

For those who don't know what I am taking about, here's the background thread and a pic of the prototype:

viewtopic.php?f=64&t=31208

Here's an early video of the prototype flying that I shot for a past video contest:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwESfODvClE

This shows the build of the prototype. Since then I've flown this bird for a year and found its weak and strong points. Mods from the proto are as follows:

-Slightly increased aileron size to help alleviate the light weight "airbrake" effect in rollers.
-Changed to EPP for foam fuse core material to allow for the use of standard CA during construction and repairs.
-Removed most of the foam from the rear structure core to help with glue bonding issues and increase stiffness.
-Added CNC light ply servo trays to ease construction and increase stiffness of servo area.

AUW should remain at the 5lb mark when equipped with a standard electric 40 size power system and 4S 4000mah packs. Weight with a "large" 40 size glow setup such as a saito 82 should be similar but as of yet no one has done a nitro mad cap so I don't have a reference point yet. The design IS nitro capable however.

The flight performance of the EVO is outstanding. Its light weight allows for extremely tight aerobatics and almost effortless recovery from screwups. All pilots who flew the prototype at nash came away calling the EVO a step forward in flight performance. I personally describe it as cheating as it is just too easy to make it look good in the air.

I have not yet had a heavy crash to test big durability, but I have dorked the prototype several times and it has come out with nothing more than broken hinges and a crack in the rudder post so far. The production versions will be even tougher than the prototype having eliminated the weak insulation foam core. I expect that durability will be on par with a standard mojo tube style bird.

The intent is to have this bird come in at a similar price point to most other 50" birds such as the mad yak 50 or Ron's designs. I do not have a firm price yet as I need to judge how big of a run I will be doing and price out materials.

If you are interested, please post up. This isn't a pay in now deal, but I would appreciate if we could keep tire kickers to a minimum as this thread will determine my pricing.

I'll do up a nitro version if I can convince myself that a piped .55ax will do the trick...

Ian, why not scale it up just a tad (say 6" more wingspan) and call it a 60-size to warrant a Hunnert?

Honestly I think that the advent of better and better e-power systems have made the old 40 and 60 size classes less relevant. The new 44" birds at 3lbs or less are far better flying than traditional 40 size and the mad cap 50 does the same for 60 size. Less cost, less weight, better performance, and it will fit in a smaller car.

If I make a bigger version eventually, it will either be for 20 or 30cc gas.

The piped 55 will be fine on an EVO 50". I'm flying with an e-power system that is an equivalent so I don't see where the 55 would be a problem.

Its not really the size with this bird, Its not much smaller than a Mojo .60. The difference is the construction has made this airframe so light that it is capable of being powered by large .40size epower, A 55ax would actually be plenty powerful enough if you ask me. When I mean this bird is light... its LIGHT 5lbs AUW flying.

Yeah, you got me going on those 6S setups and I don't want to reinvest in 4S gear...

Put me down for an evoCap - nitro mount if there's a cutting difference.
