I use AVG2015 (the free edition of course). The free stuff isn't all that great since the protection is minimal. At least that is what an IT guy told me. He said AVG is as good as it gets for free.

Windows 8 sucks.
I have never used any anti-virus on my machine. I do use spybot search and destroy. It's a website intervention program that won't slow your machine down like anti-virus does.

The main thing is:
-Never click an .exe file that comes from a random email or from the internet unless you are sure what it is and want it.
-Never say yes OR NO to a pop-up while surfing the net. Always close those with the X in the upper right corner. If there is no X in the upper right corner OR it is somewhere else, it's probably bad so close those by closing the entire tab in your browser.
-Free software is NEVER free. It will come with ads or some other installed garbage. Avoid it.
-I've already covered 99.9% of the way most machines get infected. Be smart about it and you will not have a problem.

I've used spy bot quite a bit in the past. But I've mostly been using phone or my tablet for years now. The wife just got new laptop with 8 and your right its horrible.
Wasn't sure what was the thing to use now days

Hi dhooks,

I've been testing/using BitDefender Free for a little while now on one of my home machines, seems to be OK.

More important to practice responsible usage like Thumbskull posted above. I would add the following
- Use a third party browser like Firefox or Chrome instead of IE
- Do not turn off built-in security features like UAC
- Don't give the main account you use admin rights.

I'm not sure about Win 8 support, but the 3 I suggest are Avast, AVG and SuperAntiSpyware. Spybot S&D is also good.

I have proven time and time again that the free programs find infections that Norton and McAfee do not. The free programs run faster, use far less resources and obviously cost less. The major downside is you can't schedule activities with them unless you buy a license.

Google and it's products are the most invasive spyware I have ever known.

I should add:
Never add a toolbar or browser helper. They are ALL bad for your computer.

AVG and Avast are what my IT buddies have recommended. Ever since I started using Avast about 10years now, no more viruses.

I've been using Norton for 15yrs . Havent had an issue with it in years . One time about 5 yrs ago I saw Norton pop up 5 times telling me it blocked a virus . One malicious cookie got through I couldn't get off . I ended up deleting Norton and reloading it and problem solved on initial scan . That was the only issue I ever had .

Tried McAfee once . Paid 9.99 for it . Ended up deleting it and going back to Norton .

Win 8 comes with anti virus already installed-

Antivirus protection now included for your PC

In Windows 8, Windows Defender replaces Microsoft Security Essentials. Windows Defender runs in the background and notifies you when you need to take specific action. However, you can use it anytime to scan for malware if your computer isn’t working properly or you clicked a suspicious link online or in an email message.

I used to use Spybot but have been using Superantispyware for several years now. I like it....

I always found Norton to be a resource hog.... ymmv

If ya wanna be even safer, dump windows altogether and run this

I used AVG for probably 20 years but just got too cumbersome or so it seemed. For the last year or so I have been running Panda and I like it.... It's lightweight and cloud based so no local updating needed

jrjr, that's a spammer reviving an old thread. Last post in this thread was over a year ago.
