RV roof Repair

PostPosted: Sat Sep 10, 2011 7:42 am

A little help Bro's.

I noticed a bump on my RV roof. It turns out to be a piece of the plywood roof (2" X 5") has separated and is now curling up and is raising the rubber roof material. It's not the whole sheet of Ply and but a layer of the Ply. The local RV dealer told me it's about $ 4500.00 to fix it. That's just crazy.

WHY, can't I just slice it up, 60 minutes epoxy it with a couple of screws and then cover or patch the repair with a rubberized sealant.

Thanks
Tim

It's $4500 for them to peel back the rubber layer, replace the plywood, then add a new layer of rubber. It's $10 for you to slice the rubber, fasten the ply back down, then seal the rubber. Their fix makes it like new, your fix will work - just not as pretty.

if you can stop the ply from warping (screw it down) there is sone kind of 4" wide tape that RV'rs rave about that lasts forever, think it's called etrnabond
http://www.amazon.com/EternaBond-RSW-4- ... 164&sr=8-1

never used it myself

I was told the same thing 5 years ago with my camper . I had a bad leak in the rear I took a few tubes of 100 Year silcone and worked it around the bad area then bought a gallon of rubber repair and rolled it with two coats of treatment . No more leaks I am keeping close eye on it so I can catch it if it comes back. Be good for 5 more years

Stay away from epoxy on the repair, use somethign that will flex a little without cracking.

Plywood is shot, replace it. It is cheap. Then use the eternabond tape to reseal it. Any rot will just spread. Also there is a roll on rubberised sealant use that over the entire repair.

4500 bucks?!?! Holy shit!!!

Plywood rot ain't never gonna ge better unless you cut it out like previosly stated. I've used eternal tape, it's the cat's ass! Rolling out rubber isn't all that hard either. I still can't believe you were quoted 4500 bucks....sounds like robbery to me, but what the hell do I know!

It is never a good idea to recoat the RV roof without making essential repairs needed before the application. If the ply-wood sheet under the roof is damaged or rotted then you have to fix it first otherwise the rot will only spread leading to mold or mildew. As far as leaks are concerned, I recommend using RV Roof Magic as I know you won't be disappointed.

i tore off an r/v roof one time. took 2x4's and cut them and belt sanded to a gentle curve. secures ply to them with screws and sonolastic- a urethane construction adhesive. I had the siding business at the time, so used my brake to make a standing seam roof out of trim coil. glued it down with aluminized gutter seal. worked well. lived in it while i built the house, then traded it for a honda 750 and 500 bucks...not bad, i traded my v-8 corvair for the motor home, so low cost living!

I just put an EPDM roof on my porch last weekend. I'd give ya the other half of my stupid-expensive bucket of bonding adhesive if it wasn't a full 24 hour drive out to Wyoming.

On the other hand, I could get a Crunchy Chicken Potato Burrito from Taco John's...
