How long does it take to build/assemble a car in a modern factory? Less than an hour? How long does it take to design a car? Several years? How many foriegn car companies have their engineering people employed here in the states? None, unless I'm mistaking. And the qty of man hours (and size of salary) for design is much higher than assembly. Kinda makes the foreign assembly plants on US soil thing look like a marketing gimmick...
People always focus on the blue collar jobs leaving the country which is fine, but at the same time no one expects foriegn companies to bring their white collar jobs over here. Kinda weird if you ask me. To be fair, people do complain about white collar jobs leaving the country too, just not in connection with the auto industry (not that I've heard, anyway).
the other problem is the union mentality that just can't work here anymore. The foreign run plants here in the US don't need a union and somehow the workers are still happy. Gone are the days of finding a job with a high school education making $27+ /hour with full bennies and 4+ weeks of paid vacation. They just don't exsist. At least not around here. Yet the workers here in the US just seem to think they deserve that kind of income and don't seem to realize just how lucky they are until they loose their job. The only big "plant" around here that does pay this kind of wage is GE. My father in law just retired from there-(makes as much as me from his pension) he has told me (along with other GE workers I know) that most of the guys work harder at blowing off / finding places to nap, punching in their buddies time card when they're not even at work, etc, etc, than if they would just do their job.
Then they go on strike because of some bullshit about making even more money and time off (you get paid to strike too)
I don't know, guess I'm just jealous. But at least I can sleep at night (not at work) knowing that I work for a really cool guy that works just as hard (actually harder) as me at his own business. There are 4 of us, and we rely heavily on each other to get the days work done. And we do. For a fair wage in this area. I'm not rich but I'm not poor.
Do I think that ALL automotive ceo's are also grossly overpaid for what they do?- yes- from all nations. Do they deserve to be let go when they fuck up?- yes- from all nations. Is that what happens? NO!
whatever
I'm done ranting, thanks for letting me.
