First kit build, OMP Pro Yak

PostPosted: Wed May 27, 2009 7:43 pm

Been flying my Mojo For a couple months now so when a guy at the field offered to sell an OMP Yak kit I had to give it a try for my first RC plane kit build. Got the air frame together with no troubles. It will still be a few weeks till I get all the hardware.
Here's a few shots of the finished air frame. Fairly satisfied with my first covering job.

I have built a few small control line planes back in my teenage years. Paint and tissue cover but still fairly basic, that was 30 years ago though. I've patched a few ARFs and read thru the build tips which helped a lot. Still don't know if it will fly or not.

You'll like flying the yak.

You may want to fire your landscaper though...

Took the Yak out this weekend and flew a couple of thanks through it. I powered it with an old Thunder Tiger pro 46 I rebuilt and ran with out the muffler baffle. The yak flew great, couple clicks of down trim was all it needed. Power was good and the low speed handleing was great. I used Wild Freds tip from the Lam Yak build about makeing the airfoils leading edge sharper at the root of the wing and more rounded out at the wing tip to help reduce tip stall. Don't know if it was that or just the planes regular characteristics but I know it's gonna be a blast to fly as I develop my 3D abillity.

My Mojo 40 is fun but I think I need to rebalnce it from the previous owners set up as it's heavy on the left side and stalls to the left when I slow it down.

I've got a new OS55 broken in so I guess the 46 will only get a couple more flights before the 55 goes on. Hope I don't rip the wings off. :D

Congrats Sandfly! How do you like the OS55 with the muffler baffle removed? I've heard some folks actually think the engine runs better witht he baffle in place. I've tried both and can't decide. Perhaps a little more power with the baffle out but seems smoother with the baffle in. Who knows?

Hey, it's someone else from Idaho. We do have Athol coming up in July if you are interested.

Athol

Looks like you've been here for a while, but good to see a few other bros from the area.
