Light RC Rebel Z Lite build thread

PostPosted: Sun Nov 02, 2014 12:38 pm

I'm not sure it's fair to call it a build thread. Sam even paints them reducing my time involved by a few more hours, yes I am painfully slow. I pulled the contents out for a brief inspection. As with my previous Light RC planes the foam, cutting and painting are excellent. There are few new ideas, well new to me, incorporatedinto this plane. The most significant is the rolling landing gear, we'll get to that later though.

Here's some pics of what I got accomplished last night in just a few minutes. I honestly spent more time inspecting the kit contents and getting setup to assemble this than I did gluing the major pieces together. I bet I spent only about 15 minutes gluing these peices together.

A little more progress. The wing spars(it has 2 spars :tu: :tu: ), elevator spar and airleron counter balance spars are glued in as well as the bottom of the fuse. Next up the 1mm CF rod and the 1mm x 3mm flat CF landing gear legs. The CF rod and gear legs both contribute to stiffening the airframe.

For those that say they have no time to build I have spent 10-15 minutes at a time on this plane starting last night. I frequently have to stop to deal with family, chores etc... I am slow slow(not just mentally haha) since I check the fit of everything(sometimes a few times) before I glue it. I also try to think a few steps ahead to ensure I'll have material length needed etc. Anyway most of my builds are often done just a few minutes at a time. I bet this plane is ready to fly for next weekend.

I got half the 1m CF bracing for the fuse done, the right side. Well almost half. There's another piece from the H-stab to the bottom of the fuse and 1 on each side on top from the H-stab to the vertical stab. Mine doesn't quite match Dave's I was basing mine off the LRC Cap 34 and a couple pics pics that Sam sent me. Hopefully I'll get to work on the bracing for the left side this evening as well.

In case you're wondering there are computer power supplies on the plane. The are excellent for building planes with once they fail. The are rigid, seem to be about the right weight most of the time and are most importantly square. Oh and they are free since they are basically trash once they fail, :D :D :D :D .

Landing gear ready for glue. I left the leg and axle long for the pic, they will be cut/sanded flush with the wheel pant when complete.

Here's the pieces that make the landing gear really. They connect LG legs, wheel pants and axle. 1 is ready to install the other has 1 side bent.

The top of the fuse has been glued on. I figured you'd get a kick out of what I came up with the keep it square while the glue setup so here's a couple pics.

I also finished getting the landing gear(wheels and pants) ready to mount. I have chosen to leave it off until I finish everything else. I found it was best to cut the wheel pant slot to the proper length using the precut slot as a guide and then cut it all the way to the bottom. This allowed me to slide the plastic bracket in with the sides bent. Sam laser cut the brackets with a small score that you use a guide to bend the sides 90 degrees. I just put a pair of needle nose pliers next to the line and gently bent them over a bit at a time to ensure I didn't break them. It worked perfectly and I never felt it was going break despite my reservations. The brackets are quite strong, and once glued into the wheel pant is very strong. I lined the slot in the wheel pants with a very thin coat of glue and the inside and outside where the bracket would connect and simply held it 'til the glue was set. I used Quik Grip for this. In fact I had never used Quik Grip before, but have used it for the entire build thus far. In most places I think I prefer hot glue, though I don't miss the frickin spider webs. The only downside to hot glue is the low working time.

Next up is control horns and radio install, :tu: .

Haha, I'll sell anyone of the Reserve posts for One Meeeeeeellion dollars though.

I realized a while ago I kind of like having most of the pics in a build thread near the first post so I figured I'd hit a few reserve posts.

Pics of the top and bottom RTF. 5.5oz with no battery, 6.45oz with 2S 350mah and 7.2oz with a 3S 500mah.

What motor/electronics are you gonna use? I've been following the mini e-pbf rules thread, and am considering one of those to try to get some local guys interested in indoor combat...

I'm really glad to see Whtbronco doing a build thread on the Rebel Z Lite!

Here's some photos of my Rebel Z Lite, and a list of the electronics.

motor - SK3 - 2122-1800kv (hobby king)
prop - 8x3.8 (apc or towerpro)
lipo - 2S 500
esc - Plush 10 amp ESC with a built-in 2 amp BEC (hobby king)
servos - Futaba 3114
receiver - Orange 610 DSM2
weight - 6.0 oz w/o battery, and 7.1 oz w/battery

Some additional weight could be saved with a smaller lipo, lighter motor, and lighter servos.

Mine has the following:
Motor: T-motor 2600 (discontinued)
Prop: GWS 8"x4"DD
LiPo: 2S 350
ESC: Castle Thunderbird 9 amp
Servos: Spektrum A2020
Weight: 6 ounces including battery

I was getting 6 minute flights yesterday while putting up with a 10-15 mph wind.

Innov8tive designs carries Cobra motors for those of you that don't want to deal with HK. The 2203-46 (Kv 1720) and 2204-32 (Kv 1920) would both work. They run about $20 each.

My Rebel Z Lite will have the following electronics:
JR S185 servos
VH GForce 2s 350-500mah
Castle Phoenix 10amp ESC
CustomCDR Cool Wind Single motor - 24g with prop saver mount
8x3.8, 8x4.7 or 8x6 prop APC or GWS DD (I change props as some planes feel better to me with 1 style or the other I have found)
FrSky D6FR Rx - 6g stripped

I posted a few more pics, above, of my current progress and added in the captions for the previously added pics. I had forgoten the captions like an idiot.

I have high hopes for this plane. My LRC Indoor Magnum was my favorite foamy ever. It was just so slow and controllable I was able to learn a lot with it. The LRC Sbach 342 35" is a really, really nice foamy once I got it set up right. It flies like a balsa plane, not like a foamy, and handles wind quite well. The things that Tarzan did with my Sbach were just amazing, I didn't even know a foamy could do rollers so fast. They sure can't when I'm flying them   .

I just ordered up one of these. Got the orange and blue paint on it. Got the SK3 motor and HXT900 swervos with a 10a plush on the way.

Flew my new to me Pluma for the first time last night in the gym. Made a few laps and got it trimmed, pulled into a hover, hovered really nice, and bam someone flew right into me. Nosed it in and trashed the front third of the plane.... freakin depron. Should have known not to go that route or at least not in busier airspace lol.
