Barn find

PostPosted: Mon Jun 17, 2013 12:54 pm

Finally got to head upto my granddady's today and dig out his tractor.

51' Ford. I have new tires, steering wheel and seat for it. I have the origional owners manuel as well.

I put many miles on this when i was little helping plant tobacco and bush hog.

She's practically new i guess with only 4k miles on it sense it was baught new by his father in law. Been setting sence 97' except for a couple times it was moved around and once to bush hog the property last year.

I've got to get a battery and check fuel lines and filters and start it up. Don't have a trailer so ill have to drive it the 20min car ride home so I can really tear into it and get it in working shape and new paint.

Once I get it running I can get my 2 acer yard mowed in 10min!

Believe it or not that paint was new in 96. Tires also.

Ill take all major components apart and replace what's needed then paint it all back origional (like it is now).

Can't afford a full tear down resto so ill just get it running good and looking good. It won't be a show tractor. It will be worked like it supposed to.

Yup. Gatta do that and sump the fuel tank to check for rust.

They were all grey untill 51. Then they painted the engine and undercarriage red starting in 51. Not sure when they turned blue but they are blue nowa days.

4,000 miles on it, that's pretty good for a vehicle. I will have get rid of the hour meter on my tractor and get a odometer too! haha!

Looks like a fun project. I got my grampa's first tractor a couple years ago, a 1938 Allis Chalmers model B. This tractor replaced the horses on his farm. I got it running last winter and plan on restoring it someday. Technology was pretty simple back then, so they are pretty easy to work on. Fun stuff!!

On a tractor that would be hours not miles. It's a clean looking tractor.

If the tires hold air no sense in changing them if it's going to be a working tractor. I've seen tractor tires be so badly weather checked you could nearly stick your finger in the cracks and still hold air and pull just fine..

Rears will have some air in them even if they have calcium in them. I'd get the calcium out of the rear tires if you don't need it for ballast. It's highly corrosive and will eat the rims.

If the fronts are bad replace them if you already have the tires, but tractor tires are pretty tough and don't turn very fast so they can be in pretty bad shape and still be functional.

Corrosive. Really?

It does need the ballast because in mud this thing is way too light to make way (im told) but untill its actually time to get to work after the "resto" ill take it out and clean the rims and insides.
